Sense and nonsense about significance testing
نویسندگان
چکیده
Throughout most or all of the empirical sciences, significance testing is one of the most widely used statistical procedures. Unfortunately, it is also widely abused. In recent years, an increasing number of authors have expressed concern over such abuse; see, e.g., the book by Ziliak and McCloskey (2008) who focus mainly on economics, and Kruschke (2010) who focuses on cognitive sciences. In a recent paper, Ambaum (2010) adapted some of the discourse to a climate science setting. While it is important that the theory and practice of significance testing comes under critical scrutiny, it sometimes happens that the criticism goes a bit overboard. Häggström (2010) exposes some examples of this in the case of Ziliak and McCloskey (2008). The purpose of the present note is to evaluate Ambaum (2010) in this respect.

Split genes and RNA splicing.
A number of genes in higher organisms and in their viruses appear to be split. That is, they have "nonsense" stretches of DNA interspersed within the sense DNA. The cell produces a full RNA transcript of this DNA, nonsense and all, and then appears to splice out the nonsense sequences before sending the RNA to the cytoplasm. In this article what is known about these intervening sequences and ab...
متن کاملBRCA1, BRCA2 and breast cancer: a concise clinical review.
Less than 5% of breast cancers are hereditary, but over 90% of hereditary breast cancers are caused by a mutation of either BRCA1 or BRCA2. The mutation may be inherited from either the maternal or the paternal side of the family. Clinicians should consider specific criteria in the family history to determine when a patient may benefit from counselling and appropriate testing. Testing is genera...
متن کاملMaking Sense of Nonsense: Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein
The aim of this paper is to make sense of cases of apparent nonsense in the writings of Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein. Against commentators such as Cora Diamond and James Conant, we argue that, in the case of Wittgenstein, recognising such a category of nonsense is necessary in order to understand the development of his thought. In the case of Kierkegaard, we argue against the view that the noti...

متن کاملLewis Carroll ' s ' Jabberwocky ' : non - sense not nonsense 1
Although Lewis Carroll's 'Jabberwocky' is traditionally considered to be 'nonsense', such a characterisation ultimately rests on a Western folk notion of language as fundamentally semantico-referential. A more semiotically, and pragmatically, informed view of language and language-use, however, is capable of describing in considerable detail both the means by which a text such as 'Jabberwocky' ...
